PIAZZA RISORGIMENTO

Porto Cesareo o Cesarea romana, sorge sul luogo di fronte all’antica Sasina, anche se il territorio presenta testimonianze di insediamenti umani, collocabili intorno ai secolo XVIII e XVII a.C., in località Scala di Furno.Ciò è attestato dai resti di un villaggio, che fungeva, molto probabilmente, da emporium, rinvenuto presso la stessa località, frequentato da marinai di provenienza greca, in cui si sono trovate, oltre ad un’area dedicata alla dea Thana, statuette votive e pezzi di ceramica.Certamente tutta la costa dell’Astrea, sino a Torre Lapillo, durante il periodo della dominazione romana, ebbe a svolgere un notevole ruolo portuale, ben rapportato alla funzione agropastorale dell’Arneo e alle vicinanze della Via Traiana o Sallentina.

Porto Cesareo posto tra Gallipoli e Taranto,grazie ai sui porti naturali, uno sulla riviera di levante e l'altro sulla riviera di ponente, è un antico borgo di pescatori. Il porto della riviera di levante si affaccia sull’Isola Grande, detta anche Isola dei Conigli,è uno dei più bei posti. La costa si estende per ben 18 chilometri ed è formata per il 75% di sabbia bianchissima e soffice ed è protetta da tantissimi isolotti. Popolazione residente: 5.250; Superficie territoriale: Kmq 34,67; Altitudine: 1 metro s.l.m.;

Porto Cesareo è"AREA MARINA PROTETTA" istituita con decreto del 12/12/1997

Porto Cesareo or Roman Caesarea, built on the site across from the Sasina, although the area is evidence of human habitation, located around the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries BC, in town Scale Furno.Ciò is attested by the remains of a village which served, very likely, emporium, found at the same site, frequented by sailors of Greek origin, which are found, plus an area dedicated to the goddess Thana, votive statuettes and pieces of the whole coast of ceramica.Certamente 'Astraea, until Torre Lapillo during the period of Roman rule, had to play a significant role port, well compared to the function of Arneo agropastoral and near the Via Traiana or Sallentina.
Porto Cesareo place between Gallipoli and Taranto, thanks to the natural ports, one on the east coast and the other on the west coast, is an ancient fishing village. The port of the east coast of the island overlooking the Great, also known as Rabbit Island, is one of the most beautiful places.
